It depends on your intended use. Though each brush can be used in many different applications, the most common uses for each brush are as follows: Flat for foundations, Flat Angled for contouring and bronzers, Angled for blush, Tapered for concealing, and Round for mineral powders.
The bristles are synthetic which is means they are man-made with nylon or polyester filaments and yes, they are very soft.
